[It's said with creeping levels of self-disapproval; Sanji knows he didn't do as much homework as he could've. But hey, it'd seemed cool, the kind of thing he thought Yusuke would enjoy to experience.
What a relief to see he wasn't completely off the money.]
They got some other art venues set up in the tents -- [Jewelry, traditional paintings, and the like] -- but the focal point's definitely the chalk art.
Yes, chalk would make the most sense. It's a temporary exhibit, I presume, so chalk would be easier to wash away. But you can do vibrant, unique pieces with it... and it would be the best kind of medium for this sort of surface.
[ And he's off. Verbally, at least.
He's made his way to one of the barriers around the art and is nearly leaning over the edge of it to get a better look at the most prominent pieces. ]
I can see why. Crafting a piece is tough enough as is, but crafting a piece knowing it will be fleeting and putting that much work into it anyway... is very respectable.
Perfect that Yusuke's half-leaned over the barrier during his explanation; it means he can't see Sanji break into a sudden, triumphant grin or how he shakes his head in amusement.]
Yeah, I'm pretty damn impressed with the coloring. [Once he's schooled his expression, Sanji follows after -- and maybe tugs on Yusuke's shirt before he wheels over the edge. Please don't get them kicked out.] I always figured chalk couldn't pull off shades like this... or y'know, would just look chalky.
Most people think of the sort you see on a board in old school shows, but...
[ Oh. He likes the one of the airship... the placement of the shadow is clever, and only makes it all seem very 3D and realistic. He's glad. Whoever did this had some excellent ideas. ]
It depends what you do with it. Pressure applied, or wetting the chalk produces a more vibrant shade. There are tricks to it.
[ He won't get them kicked out...! But he does move back from the barrier when Sanji tugs his shirt, going with the pull of it. ]
[He sounds impressed rather than judgmental. Sanji can barely get pen and paper to work in his favor, after all. And seriously, some of pieces? Even he stops for a closer glance, a low whistle passing through his lips.]
Oi oi, look at this one. Can you imagine how long it took to finish?
Not much. I'm thinking I should try more with it now though.
[ He'd never considered something like this. Just when he thinks he's doing well with his art, something new comes along and he has to open his eyes wider.
He's drawn over by Sanji's impressed whistle, hovering slightly over his shoulder to examine the piece as well. It's... truly stunning; the detail, the shading... ]
A while, I'd say. And if they'd had a sudden rainstorm it would have been ruined. [ Yet still, the artist persisted. ] I suppose we should be thankful for this weather.
Tch, right? Don't think I could put in that kind of investment if it's gonna get destroyed.
[So says the guy whose newest hobby is "temporary art" in the most literal sense, but hey, he's new to the field. Those types of comparisons are still lost to him.
As they make their way down the street, Sanji always keeping one eye on Yusuke to ensure he's enjoying himself (and not wandering past any barriers for a closer look), the blond eventually comes to a halt when he smells something tantalizing on the breeze. Right, right. He nearly forgot -- this festival is for the chalk art but people need to eat. There are tents set up, interspersed with the artwork, a combination of street food and more creative business ventures.
... There is also a tent appropriately named The Spice Rack, and excuse him, Yusuke, Sanji sure is making a beeline over that'a way.]
You'd be surprised what you do when you enjoy something.
[ The smell on the air doesn't pass him by either, but for different reasons - like... not actually eating breakfast. But he's not about to admit that out loud, given that Sanji has been less than impressed a lot of the time when it comes to discussing Yusuke's eating habits.
But the smell draws Yusuke in as well. He's not as quick to follow, still intrigued by the art, but it's an inevitability really. He doesn't know much about spices compared with paints or pencils, but... well. Sanji looks animated enough, in his own way. ]
Oh, they're showcasing cooking here as well. [ That's... fitting. ] I wonder if this is like the farmer's market, with independent sellers...
[Sanji's response takes a while to form. His eyes are glued to a spice so red it looks like it was drawn with crayon, but the consistency is smooth, thoroughly ground to look almost silky to the eyes.
And of course the vendor catches his interest immediately, offers him a chance to smell and even taste her wares if he's willing. He doesn't smile, but his eyes light with fire as he accepts the offer, grabbing one of the sample bags to examine with care]
Would you look at this? It's the color of paint. I'm almost afraid to put this in a dish.
[Oh, but the smell once he opens the bag. No surprise that it nearly sets his hair alight, this is probably a chili pepper of some sort. Not for the faint of heart, the vendor promises.
[ For a brief moment, Yusuke is almost tempted to step back and immortalise that moment and look in memory to transfer to canvas or paper later. Itâs not that he hasnât seen it before - he surrounds himself with artists of every walk of life, and has seen variations on it before. But it looks so bright and vibrant on Sanji; raw and untempered on someone who is still learning just how passionate they are about their art.
Itâs endearing and intriguing all at once.
Spice and food itself might not be the medium that fuels Yusukeâs creativity, personally, but he can appreciate the rich, bright colour of it - like a slash of paint on canvas. ]
You said youâd âalmostâ be afraid to put it in a dish. [ But thereâs still that interest. That spark. ] Why not? See what you can do with it, rather then be afraid of it.
[He'll concede the quality seems top notch, but that doesn't change how food and wares at these festivals are always overpriced. There's a grimace when he's forced to shell over a sizable amount of cash for his spices.]
I'm gonna make it last until summer vacation, at least.
[ Ah, the double edge blade that is festival anything. People gotta make a profit somehow. ]
If itâs as potent as it smells, that sounds doable.
[ It smells like one of those spices that doesnât need any more than just a small pinch at a time, at least. While Sanji is being separated from his money, Yusuke takes the chance to peer outside of the current stall and at some of thenother non-art related stands, not his eyes arenât firmly pinned to the ground. There are certainly a lot of them, including whar smells like a bakery time stall next to the one theyâre currently at, and what looks like a appropriately themed cake related sketch on the ground just in front of it, which he immediately gravitates towards to get a good look at. ]
Edited (oh my god don't do tags at 6:30am just after waking up?) 2018-03-12 20:57 (UTC)
[Yuusk is he gonna need to invest in a harness ala Zoro? He turns his head for two seconds and then the guy is just gone.]
Oi, at least wait for me to finish paying...
[Thankfully, Yusuke doesn't go far -- in fact, Sanji bumps into him from behind, having also gravitated toward the thematically drawn cake on the ground. The smell is delightful, though he'd been careful to eat before arriving. Gotta save dem coins.
-- Which begs the question, doesn't it? Sanji's voice becomes dangerously pleasant, right next to Yusuke's ear]
[ Take him to a street art show and he is gonna view the street art!! It's!! Only natural!!
He's so intensely into looking at the chalk art again that he absolutely fails a spot check and ends up surprise!jolting when Sanji's voice is suddenly right there in his ear. Hi. He, uh. Doesn't want to answer that question. ]
I... [ ABORT MISSION. ] ... had coffee?
[ Coffee's a food group, right? It's. It's beans. It counts. ]
[ At least he is consistent and doesn't disappoint...?
Uh.
Okay so now the pressure is on?? Literally this whole place is just. Art and food. Help?? ]
Oh.
[ HELP?? Honestly, throwing him over his shoulder might just be faster. But he does do a visual circuit of the area, looking for something that would be varied and appealing?? ]
There, maybe? [ Sure does look like a place doing interesting looking Mexican street food tent?? Please don't kick him there. Whatever is being made there certainly smells really nice, for sure. ]
[The goal is to feed this stick of a man, not criticize his tastes (for now). Sanji glances at the vendor and after a critical pause, starts walking toward the relatively short line for food.
Yusuke better be following him because if not, he's getting dragged over. None shall escape until all stomachs are filled.]
Smells good... [Rubbing his chin] Wonder if they'd be willing to share any of the recipes...
[ He's not going to argue with the idea of eating food once they're at the stall - nor is he going to linger at the art, as much as he'd like to. He knows the drill by now. There's menu attached to the counter with a cord, but it's long enough for him to pluck one up and pull it over to them so they can see what's available. ]
Is that common? To share recipes from restaurants and stalls?
[ Oh. The quesadillas look good. And smoked salmon tostadas? Looking over the description, it looks almost refreshing compared to some of the heavier, spicier dishes. ]
Although there's no harm in asking. They do seem to have some quite unique ideas here.
[Holy shit, you can do that with salmon? Briefly, Sanji entertains the idea of breaking the cord holding the menu in place (hey, pirates gotta pirate), but after a moment's thought, he settles for pulling out his phone and opening up a memo app.
... He is absolutely typing up the entire menu. For. Reasons.]
[ Wow, Sanji... you can't just steal a whole menu that is literally what the cord is there for. Yusuke just... gently tugs Sanjiâs hand away from the cord. No breaking. But he does exactly nothing to stop him copying the entire menu while the owners arenât looking. ]
[IT'S NOT STEALING IF IT'S RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM...!]
Of course we are, I don't know what they taste like.
[Which he phrases like it's an egregious oversight that must be corrected immediately. But hey, Yusuke can tug him away once Sanji is finished his business. They're near the front of the line and barely have to wait before it's their turn to order, and after nudging Yusuke in the side:]
[ IT IS IF ITâS BREAKING A CORD TO GET IT....! Says the thief to the pirate. ]
My initial impression would be âvery niceâ, but that seems like a good enough reason.
[ Yusuke keeps looking over the menu - there are a lot of other nice things on the menu, such as various empanadas, that would be a nice extra but his attention gets snapped away pretty quickly. ]
What? No, I can pay. Youâre the one that found this place, I can at least buy lunch.. [ That, and someone here didnât just drop a lot of money on spices. ]
[A pause, in which Sanji turns the full force of his stare on Yusuke. He can't believe they're about to have an "who gets to pay" argument. Isn't that a second-date milestone?]
... Sure.
[-- Or he could just decide to be an adult because who the fuck cares. Let the starving artist have his moment.]
