Art. As in, exhibitions and making a wage from my paintings alone. I am perhaps at an advantage, as my mother has experience and connections within the art community so has been able to offer advice on the harsh realities of such a career path.

Yes. I'd like to be able to sell paintings directly. It's what my mother used to do, back in Japan.
But I am aware it is not ... guaranteed monthly income like a traditional job. So building a portfolio and a good profile with commission work is a good idea as well.
Perhaps, but it would need to be a large group of followers, and you have to account for printing costs, or the cost of canvases and the cost of your own time.
Still, I am prepared for it.
... I haven't tried sculpting, no. I'm mostly paint focused, although I have experience with sketch work, pastels, charcoals and have some practice with digital art works as well.
