I think we're still a little too young to feel worn out just yet!
[Save it for when they're older like the muns. Haru moves to the kitchen table, a little bounce in her step, and sets the box as well as the other presents down on it.]
These are actually from both Maman and myself. [She shakes her wrist a bit - still pretty itchy there, especially after one of the boxes brushed up against it.] I'd recommend opening the white box first!
[And if Yusuke does, he'll find a strawberry shortcake, made with spongecake and whipped cream, the traditional Japanese way to do so.]
... I think we can feel worn out whenever our bodies decide it is time to feel worn out. [ Says the guy who consistently pulls 24 hour days, I WONDER WHY HE'S WORN OUT A LOT, GEEZ.
The wrist shake isn't missed. His own has been h e l l but he's taken to patting at his wrist whenever it starts in an attempt to stave off scratching. ]
Oh...?
[ Hold up then, it's time to open the box and... oh. The smell of fresh cream and fruits is strong, and it looks beautiful. ] Did you make this yourself? It looks beautiful...!
[yusuke at this rate you're gonna get your first grey hair at like, 22
But it's birthday time! Haru nods at that, radiating pride over her work.]
I did! [Since they're in the kitchen, and Haru's been here enough to know where everything is by heart, she moves to get a couple of plates, forks, and napkins.] I did some research regarding Japanese desserts and pastries. I didn't realize they made shortcakes differently until then! [And though she does grab things to eat said shortcake with, she doesn't cut the cake just yet. She knows Yusuke might want to admire it first.]
I only know the way my mother used to make them - how would you make a shortcake? [ Soft and fluffy, with cream and strawberries was really the only way he could think of.
This looks incredibly similar to those - delicate and fluffy, with a light dusting of sugar. ]
How many attempt did this take? [ HE'S. JUST BEING CURIOUS. ]
I've always been taught to make it almost like a custard: light and crumbly. It'd be a little more intense in flavor as well! [And Haru loves intense flavors, but she can appreciate a cake that isn't so, with its lighter flavor complimenting the strawberries and cream.]
A few. Making the cake was simple enough, but stabilizing the whipped cream took more effort. Not doing so would make the cake soggy and unbalanced, and I wanted to make it perfect for your birthday.
[She didn't mind eating the mistakes, though. Neither did her mother.]
Another time, I didn't cut the layers quite right, so it turned out lopsided. But after that, I finally made this one!
[Strawberries aren't in season, unfortunately, so those came from a store rather than her own backyard. They're still very delicious, though!]
You can get any kind of cake from me any time! But I wanted to give you something related to your native country for this. [She moves closer to him to hug him around the middle, cheek against his collarbone.] You deserve something special for your birthday!

I've... never heard of a custard like shortcake. Only the sort you've made today. How interesting.
[ He's 100% plucking a strawberry off the top and enjoying the heck out of it, because. Delicious strawberry. Don't mind him. ]
It looks wonderful - all the effort you put in paid off. Although I would have been happy to have any cake from you, your baking is delicious.

When he's hugged, he gently rests a hand around Haru's upper back and leans into the hug. Birthday hugs are good hugs. ]
Thank you. If it's like the things you usually bake, I am certain it will be delicious.
[ He has been very spoiled today. It's... nice. ]
Hold on a moment, I'll go and get a knife and some plates.
[ Because if there is cake they should eat the cake!! ]
