[For once, Sanji is not going to be a salty sardine and drop some line about how determination just gets you kicked out of your house, he is too invested in the Little Lizard that Could--]
Maybe if he makes it over the cliff--!
[Holy shit, watch that poor kid go! There's one snake in particular that's hot on its heels, snapping and slithering to try and cut the lizard off, but their boy just keeps running for it, climbing higher and higher...]
[ Yusuke feels his grip on Sanji's sleeve tighten, and he can hear himself muttering advice for the little lizard as well. It can run, it can do it! And then it makes a fantastic leap across a tiny chasm and the snake on its heels plummets uselessly into it. ]
[Okay I'm sorry but Sanji nearly starts laughing/crying at the fuckin snake that drops into the abyss, and instead ends up making a choked noise trying to cover it up.]
Look! It's alive!
[WATCHING WITH WET, GLASSY EYES, their little cherub lizard is triumphant...! Sniffle... sniffle...]
[ Oh. ... Wow, Sanji is really touched by this moment, isn't he? He's glad that the lizard made it, and will live another day, yes. But he is not close to tears. ]
Are... [ He lifts his hand so that he can squeeze Sanji's wrist lightly, around the fabric of his clothes. ] Are you alright?
Sanji doesn't seem to know how to answer at first, giving another sniffle and looking in Yusuke's direction before he realizes that uh...]
-- Ugh. [Expression immediately flipping as he locks his shoulders into a pout, chewing on his shirt for a different reason] That dumbass was such a bleeding heart over everything! Now he's rubbing off on me!
Is it really a bad thing to be moved by something like a small creature living despite the odds being stacked against it?
[ He’s absently rubbing a soothing circle against Sanji’s wrist through the fabric of his clothes now — so focused on not making skin contact and causing Sanji to shift away that he fails to catch the odd wheezing sounds behind them. In the background, the large lizard seems to be laughing. Wheezey and more like a body motion than an audible laugh, but there’s liquid pooling in his eyes and he seems to be having a great time watching all this.
[WHELP. It didn't take long for Sanji to realize he's being made fun of by a lizard of all things, though honestly, his comedic switch for tears to fury only makes the creature guffaw more, tail banging into the rock with great enthusiasm]
Listen you little shit, the only reason I don't come over there is I'll get slime everywhere!!
[TURNS OUT THEY'RE A GREAT COMEDIC ACT. Also Sanji, no one can take you seriously when you're oozing. He can't even properly set on fire.
[ Well. Uh. At least they got the lizard laughing. And are continuing to keep the lizard laughing the longer Sanji yells at it. Carefully letting go of his sleeve, Yusuke carefully steps out of the boat and creeps a little closer to the creature. Please keep yelling, Sanji. It seems to be loving this.
It takes a lot of concentration, but he's able to use Goemon to freeze a few of the tears as they fall - catching them and popping them into what looks like a small milk bottle. Something simple to carry around in his pocket. Now he just has to uh... get past that tail again and back to the boat. Can they even get out via the boat? The current is still out there, and it's likely to pull them right back here again, isn't it?
