Yes, that would put a dent in gaining a big customer base. Lucky for him, you found the place and are willing to share the food served there with the world.
[Well, regardless of whether or not he agrees with that sentiment, Sanji seems to have realized he hasn't seated himself since entering the kitchen. He's been standing around instead, moving his weight from foot to foot, and now runs his stare up and down the bento boxes in thought.]
I don't mind. I wouldn't turn down food, and certainly not good food.
[ He pauses, and looks down at the boxes himself. Regardless of the story behind where this food actually came from, or who it was that had actually prepared it, someone had still paid for and prepared ingredients for this - and there was a lot of food here. Even if it had been extra handed off from a restaurant or whatever it was that Sanji was claiming, continuing to accept free food didn't feel right.
It was different when it was Akira or Elliot setting aside leftovers of their own dinners for him in the fridge, after all. ]
Although I would be happier to at least provide money for ingredients if that's the case. Even if this is extra leftovers, someone has still bought and paid for the means to create it.
[There's another noise at that, almost like a puff of laughter. Will wonders never cease here.]
If it matters to you, sure.
[It's an angle Sanji had already taken into consideration (and frankly, taken out of Baren's bank account with a vengeance, that's what the bastard gets for making Sanji his personal chef), so money is hardly an issue. The food he brought today? A gift and a promise fulfilled.
But he's a practical man, and there are bills to pay, and more mouths to feed down the line. Maybe. If Yusuke feels better paying for the labor, Sanji decides he's got no right to complain about it.]
-- But don't lose sleep over it, s'not like I'm hard up for cash.
I see. That's good to know then, but I've found cooking in general tends to be the biggest expense after my art supplies, and if you're doing it for fun then even more so. I don't mind contributing.
[ He can't even take credit for this one. Sanji, you utterly played yourself there. ]
I thought you said you burned macaroni cheese, though? Did something change?
[HE KNOWS, which is why he can only stand there and stew in his own stupidity. Don't get him wrong, it wasn't even a good lie to stand by, but it'd been amusing in its own way...
SIGH.]
... I remembered how to cook.
[Like a petulant child who broke his own toy.]
But I don't know how half this shit is supposed to taste, so. I needed a volunteer.
[ It's accompanied by a finger snapping motion, but the sound isn't strong. What a strange thing to suddenly remember - let alone what a strange thing for Retrospec to take from him in the first place. ]
That is quite a jump in skill though - especially if you were just guessing the flavours. [ He's looking at the food again now, a little more thoughtfully. ] It was all fairly accurate, if authenticity is what you're concerned about. Maybe a little more mirin and sugar in the tamagoyaki, but that's more a case of personal preference on my part than incorrect flavours.
[Wasn't quite guessing, Sanji almost corrects. More that his brain knew what his tongue didn't, and he had to trust that the recipe wouldn't turn into a nightmare.]
Not concerned, just -- it's like... [A faint squint] A homage to a culture I'm not apart of. I figure the least I can do is get that shit right. You gotta know what you're doing before you take creative license.
[ The fact he actually stops to consider it is enough to give Yusuke a slight moment of triumph. Creativity and an outlet, indeed. Considering Sanji had told him how supposedly awful his cooking abilities were, it's a little amazing that this is what he excels in... ]
I'm not such a purist when it comes to Japanese food that I would judge you for trying.
The skill is there. Not a gift he asked for but one he still received, and he can't pretend he doesn't feel the drive to test his abilities. It's that part of his soul which is more him than pirate, the piece that refuses to do anything by halves when he's willing to put in the effort.
But that's still different from a "want". How long has it been since he craved something for himself? He doesn't know, he stopped counting the days. It seems weird to start again.]
Mm, we'll see.
[he rouses himself with a shrug, decides he's gonna take it a day at a time, like always.] I'll let you know if I come up with anything.
[ Art is adaptable, and he's spent a long, long portion of his life limited to typical "art" - paints and pencils, digital sketching and colouring - as the extent of what he viewed as art. The expansion of that over the past few months, and allowing himself to experience it all through other people's eyes... that's exciting. Letting himself indulge in fashion as an art; learning about photography from hearing others talk about it. And now even what a person could do with food -- that in and of itself speaks of creativity to him.
If given the same ingredients, what would two different people make? How would their final products differ? It's the same with art - paints and pencils, or fashion and fabrics. The breadth of what different people can create with the same basic tools.
It's exciting. It's what keeps him so hooked to art, and will keep him hooked for the rest of his life. He hopes.
It'd be nice, to help other people find that excitement and spark for something. ]

Eh.
I'll discuss it with the head chef.
If I see him again.
Kinda picky about his customers and all.

It must be tricky to keep a business running that way. I wish him good luck.
